Unlike Achievements on the 360, Trophies must always have the same value, this constant value makes it possible to convert Trophies to a Gamerscore. However, it is not possible to convert from 360 Achievements to Trophies easily. It would be equivalent to knowing how many Trophies a person has simply by looking at their Trophy level. They may only have Bronze Trophies, in which case they will need to collect a lot more than someone who has a healthy balance between Bronze, Silver, Gold and maybe even a few Platinum Trophies.

When converting from PS3 Trophies there are at least 3 constants that you can work with: downloadable games are worth 200 Gamerscore, full retail titles give 1000 Gamerscore (excluding DLC in both cases),and if a person has a Platinum then they would have 1000 Gamerscore on the same game if it were on the 360. This last fact grants you some leverage between the final values of your Trophies.

Looking through the Trophy lists of a large sample of games you can start to work out the ratios between Bronze, Silver, and Gold. It is about 2 Bronze trophies to a Silver and 3 Silvers to a Gold. So therefore a Gold Trophy - in terms of Gamerscore - should be 3 times the value of a Silver and 6 times that of a Bronze. Using the same Trophy lists it is possible to start to generate possible average values for each when bearing in mind the first fact; all downloadable games are worth 200 Gamerscore.

This is when the Platinum Trophy proves helpful in differentiating a full retail title from a downloadable one, as it will always be awarded if you fully complete a game. This is why the Platinum trophy has been given such a large value compared to the other Trophies. To be able to ensure that downloadable games do not go over 200 Gamerscore, the 3 Trophies do not have enough Gamerscore equivalence when they are put into the context of a full retail game. The Platinum Trophy allows the final value to be boosted up to the required 1000 without fear of ruining the accuracy for the rest of the conversion.
